Karyn Carpenter

I left the field of event planning and corporate promotions to follow my passion of photography in the mid-90's. The decision was made to change careers while living in Sicily. When others were chasing down pasta with delicious sauces (some containing suspiciously damning eyes and tendrils) I was drawn to the faces of the elders, the fishermen, the women who wore their experiences in the lines of their faces.

Upon returning to the US, the opening of my Seattle studio coincided with the World Trade Organization riots (The Battle of Seattle), both in location and day. Business was a bit slow that week but no one had ever thrown a war for my viewing pleasure before, so while tear gas flooded the streets, I watched with glee from my safe 10th floor perch. Business picked up after that, but it was never that exciting again! (For the record, I also adore a huge thunderstorm and tornado season.)

Now retired, I live in a small village in central Mexico where I capture the faces and events that surround me with my camera. I love to travel and photograph the personality of a land and its people. Parts of my heart remain on foreign soil - especially Sicily, Uganda and Newfoundland.

Four 100-pound Newfoundland dogs have maintained constant vigil by my side for the past 35+ years. Gentle, wise, and accepting of kings and street people alike, for me, the Newfoundland knows no equal in this world.
